This restored sheet from 1855 sets two great Southern ports side by side: the City of Savannah, Georgia, on the left and the City of Charleston, South Carolina, on the right. Both plans are enclosed in an ornate scrollwork border of the kind found in American atlases of the 1850s, and the wards of each city are tinted in soft pink, green and yellow. It shows both cities as they stood six years before the Civil War began in Charleston Harbor.
The Savannah plan shows the famous grid of squares first laid out by James Oglethorpe in 1733, with the Savannah River and its wharves along the northern edge of the city. The Charleston plan shows the peninsula between the Ashley and Cooper rivers, with its streets, wharves and public buildings drawn in close detail. A reference list is set beside the Savannah plan, so the sheet can be read as a guide as well as a picture of the two cities.
This map suits a proud local of either city, a family with Lowcountry roots, or a collector of antebellum American maps. It is a thoughtful housewarming gift. Like every print in the collection, it is printed on matte paper, ships unframed and is available in a range of sizes, from a compact study print to a large statement piece.
