Teesdale worked with the leading British engravers of his day, and his best-known work is a large world map that Dower also engraved. This copy is distinguished by its vivid, full coloring, which is unusual because most surviving examples carry only hand-colored territorial outlines. The sheet is a regional map of the island, drawn when Van Diemen's Land served chiefly as a British penal colony, its settlement having grown from a small military outpost founded in 1803 while its Indigenous population had fallen to around 300 through disease and warfare.

Two settlements of real size had grown up by 1831: Hobart Town, now Hobart, on the Derwent River below Mount Wellington, and Launceston at the head of the Tamar estuary in the north. Convict labor built the roads, government buildings and prisons around them, and Port Arthur on the Tasman Peninsula had opened as a penal station only the year before. Knowledge of the interior, especially the western half, was still thin, and the sheet describes whole districts in plain notes such as 'emu plain,' 'peak like a volcano,' 'sandy' and 'forest.' Former convicts generally left as soon as they could, most resettling in Victoria across Bass Strait. Richards was a printing innovator who introduced photo-lithography to the Government Printing Office, and this sheet carries his office's clean, practical style, with relief shown by hachures and the mineral-bearing districts printed in color. It covers New South Wales within its post-Victoria boundaries, with an inset placing the colony on the Australian continent, and it is classed as a mineral-resources map. Railways run inland from Ports Hunter and Jackson, the harbors of Newcastle and Sydney, with proposed extensions drawn in ahead of the track, alongside roads and telegraph lines. The sheet also delineates the Pastoral Districts, the wool economy that kept the colony prosperous after the Port Phillip District broke away to become Victoria. Colored zones mark kerosene shale, coal, tin, iron, silver, copper, gold and diamonds, the result of some twenty years of prospecting. The Trust was known for turning a haphazard waterfront into a planned port, and the view was prepared to illustrate that work under the title Birds Eye View of General Wharfage Scheme West of Dawes Point as it will appear when completed. It is a large, high-vantage image looking south from above Goat Island, with cargo ships crowded through the harbor basins and proposed subaqueous tunnels drawn in. The sheet is a colored lithograph on a fold-out leaf, with relief in hachures and the plain, functional clarity of a planning office rather than any decorative flourish. Darwin, on the northern coast, was Australia's gateway toward Asia and the end of the first England-to-Australia flight in 1919. The Gulf of Carpentaria and the Coral Sea mark the northern and eastern coasts, giving any route a long overwater stage. This sheet is a colored lithograph with relief in hachures, and beyond the usual railways and boundaries it adds submarine telegraph cables, with bar scales in geographical and English miles. It covers the whole continent and Tasmania as one regional sheet, drawn when Australia was a federated Commonwealth of six states, with the Northern Territory labeled as a Commonwealth Territory.

The sheet divides the continent among Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, with Tasmania set offshore as the sixth state. Western Australia alone covers about a third of the continent, and its capital, Perth, is separated from the eastern cities by desert. Melbourne, capital of Victoria, was still the seat of the federal Parliament in 1926, since the purpose-built capital at Canberra opened only the next year. Sydney, in New South Wales, and Brisbane, in Queensland, anchored the populous east coast. Tasmania, whose capital is Hobart, had been tied to the mainland by a submarine telegraph cable beneath Bass Strait since 1859, the kind of link the sheet's cable lines record. Together the states read as a continent of coastal settlement around a thinly peopled interior.

An Australian family living abroad, a Tasmanian émigré, or a collector building a run of Commonwealth-era maps would find a fitting gift here. TheMapVault's Tasmania 1831 print by Teesdale and Dower shows the island alone in the convict era, and the Air Ministry's 1926 air-routes sheet covers the same continent as a route plan; this Stanford edition is the sober atlas reference of states, railways and cables. The Empire Marketing Board, set up in 1926, existed to persuade British shoppers to buy produce from the dominions, and this is one of the maps Gill made for it; the copy reproduced here comes from the Gill estate. The sheet is bright and busy, with waves running around the continent, a colorful striped border, a compass rose and the Australian coat of arms, and it is classed as a pictorial map of agriculture, fishing and mining. In 1928 Australia was a self-governing dominion of about six million people whose wool, wheat and meat found their biggest market in Britain.

The sheep, cattle and crops scattered across the continent stand for farming that was concentrated in a few well-known belts. Sheep and wheat dominated New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, where the Murray River and its tributaries watered the southeastern interior, and wool was the country's leading export. Queensland added cattle stations and sugar cane along its tropical coast, Western Australia supplied gold alongside its own wheat belt, and Tasmania sent orchard fruit to British markets. The fishing boats and sea creatures along the coast mark an industry that was small beside farming and mining but was still counted among the dominion's products. Kiepert was counted among the leading scholarly mapmakers of the later nineteenth century, and he had designed maps for the Berlin Society for Geography, so the atlas reads as a working reference rather than a showpiece. This sheet is outline hand-colored and engraved by H. The atlas was known for being enormous, nearly 5.5 kilograms of paper with over 400 thematic maps, and for its restrained tinted colors, which this sheet uses to separate mountains, deserts and ocean depths, with blue shading for the seas around the coast. It was printed by Wojskowe Zaklady Kartograficzne in Warsaw on beige paper as a double-page spread at 1:10,000,000 and carries an inset of Canberra. As a political and physical map of the whole continent, it records an Australia in 1967 that was a Commonwealth nation with decimal currency, introduced only the year before.

The Great Dividing Range, the Nullarbor Plain and the Simpson Desert are the landmarks the sheet names, and each has its own story. The Great Dividing Range runs down the east coast, separating the wetter coastal strip from the dry interior and feeding river systems such as the Murray and the Darling. The Nullarbor Plain, whose name means no trees, is a vast limestone expanse along the Great Australian Bight, crossed by the Trans-Australian Railway completed in 1917. The Simpson Desert holds the world's largest field of parallel sand dunes, in the arid heart of the continent. The Stanford firm had been mapping in London since 1854 and in 1874 acquired the London atlas of 1834 from John Arrowsmith, and its preface describes this quarto as a handy reference that repeats on larger scales the parts of the earth most connected with English interests, a foundation for a truly British atlas. The sheet is a steel-engraved map in color with relief in hachures, two bar scales and submarine telegraph cables drawn across the seas. It is a regional map of the continent and Tasmania, drawn in 1882 when Australia was divided into six British colonies that would not federate until 1901.

The six colonies shown are Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania, each shaded in its own color. Victoria, the smallest on the mainland, was the most densely settled thanks to the gold rushes of the 1850s, and its capital Melbourne rivaled Sydney, the capital of New South Wales, as the leading city. Queensland, which had split from New South Wales in 1859, was growing on sugar and cattle, while South Australia, founded in 1836 as a planned colony without convicts, had Adelaide as its capital and had completed the Overland Telegraph across the continent in 1872. Western Australia was the largest and least populated, with its capital Perth on the Swan River. Together the colonies read as a ring of coastal settlements tied to Britain by cable.

Anyone whose ancestors sailed from Britain to one of these colonies in the 1880s, or who follows the history of telegraphs, shipping and communications, will find a pointed gift in a sheet that records the cable links to the outside world. The atlas was meant to sit alongside Cram's Portable, Washable Map and Atlas Outfit, a set of ten wall maps in a metal briefcase, and it was built for classrooms and offices, with every map indexed and carrying population figures. This sheet is clear and orderly rather than ornate: it uses hachures for relief, an alphanumeric grid keyed to the index on pages 251 and 252, and an inset of Tasmania. The sheet is in full color to separate the political divisions, with relief in hachures, a decorative border, and two prime meridians, Greenwich and Washington, which reminds the reader that it was made for American eyes. Wax engraving was a cheaper method than copper or steel, which let commercial atlas publishers like Hunt and Eaton turn out many maps at a modest price. The sheet's character is its practical detail: it divides both main islands into counties using numbered keys, adds early regional rail lines, coastal features and mountain ranges, and carries a detailed inset of Tasmania. It is a regional map of two Pacific lands, drawn in 1893, the year New Zealand became the first self-governing country to give women the vote, and some seventeen years after the provinces were abolished in 1876.

The North and South Islands are drawn with their county divisions, a system that replaced the old provinces after 1876 and that the numbered keys explain. Christchurch was the main town of Canterbury, and Dunedin, in Otago, had grown wealthy on the gold rush of the 1860s. His maps carry a distinctive border, and the 1864 sheets use the fretwork pattern that ran from 1863 to 1869, which marks this edition as a product of those years. It is a regional map of Australia with an index of counties in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, West Australia and Van Diemen's Land, drawn in 1864 when the Northern Territory had just been placed under South Australia.

No counties are shown in North Australia, since it was still almost uninhabited, and the map includes a list of discoveries. The Trust had been set up in 1901 after an outbreak of bubonic plague to modernize a chaotic waterfront, and by 1919 it had transformed the harbor's commercial capabilities under its Engineer-in-Chief H. D. Walsh and Principal Assistant Engineer W. E. Adams, whose facsimile signatures authenticate the cartouche. The sheet is a lithograph that maps urban density through red shading, with green spaces and yellow-toned suburbs spreading toward Parramatta. It is a bird's-eye view of a city and its port, made in a year when Sydney's shipping trade was booming.

The view details the network of rail lines, dredged shipping channels and harbor facilities that fed the port, and it notes the ongoing dredging of the Western Channel to a depth of forty feet. Parramatta, at the head of the river, was the oldest inland settlement in Australia, founded in 1788, and the yellow suburbs stretching toward it show the metropolis spreading west. Spilhaus was a South African author and illustrator who began with children's books such as South African Nursery Rhymes and The Limber Elf, then turned to historical works including The Background of Geography and South Africa in the Making, and this map is one of a series of pictorial maps she produced. The design weaves together the continent's natural and colonial narratives with kangaroos and other wildlife, trains, explorers and ships. It is a pictorial regional map made in 1929, when Australia had been a Commonwealth for twenty-eight years and its Parliament had only just moved to the new capital at Canberra.

The map's central cartouche shows Captain James Cook's arrival and his claim of the east coast for Great Britain in August 1770, a pivotal moment in the colonial story. It is flanked by a border of square-rigged ships, with an inner border of intertwined fishes that reinforces the maritime theme. In the lower right a second cartouche holds the seal of Australia, above a building marked Canberra, May 1927, which probably signifies the opening of the Provisional Parliament House. Beyond the cartouches, the map marks the provinces and fills them with illustrations of the continent's native animals and its history of exploration and settlement. Together the images make a map that reads like a story.

A Canberra public servant, a Sydney or Melbourne family, or a collector of pictorial maps will find a lasting gift here, perhaps for a retirement or a wedding. TheMapVault's Gill pictorial map of 1928, drawn for the Empire Marketing Board, sells the country's produce with a salesman's flair, while Spilhaus's sheet is a historical pageant of Cook, explorers and ships. Teesdale had partnered with John Hordan and William Colling Hobson until 1832, then worked on his own and with engravers such as John Crane Dower, and he was successful enough to be registered as a partner in the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1845. The sheet includes a number of early counties, a large inset of the Swan River Settlement and a small map of the whole of Australia, which makes it a double regional map of two colonies. It was drawn in 1834, when New South Wales was a convict colony governed by Sir Richard Bourke and the Swan River colony was only five years old.

The early counties record the official districts into which the settled part of New South Wales was divided, with Cumberland around Sydney at the heart. Sydney, founded in 1788 on Port Jackson, was by 1834 a town of convicts, free settlers and expanding wool exporters, and the pastoral frontier was already pushing beyond the legal limits of settlement. The Swan River Settlement, on the far western side of the continent, had been founded in 1829 and centered on Perth and its port at Fremantle. By placing the western colony as an inset, Teesdale gave London readers a view of both ends of the British presence in Australia. A further small map shows the entire continent.

A descendant of a convict transported to New South Wales or of an early settler on the Swan River, a collector of Teesdale's atlases, or a student of colonial Australia would find a pointed gift here. The firm was a major publisher of atlases and reference works in the nineteenth century, and its maps were valued for their clarity. This map is colored by islands and carries numerous place names and several annotations, and its distinguishing feature is a pair of insets of Van Diemen's Land and Western Australia, which place the whole of the colony's Australasian neighbors on one page. It is a regional map of New Zealand drawn in 1849, nine years after the colony was founded and while its settlements, from Wellington to Dunedin, were new.

Auckland, the colony's capital, and Wellington, founded in 1840 by the New Zealand Company, were the principal towns. Nelson and New Plymouth were settled in the early 1840s, and Dunedin had been founded as a Scottish Presbyterian settlement in 1848. Canterbury, where Christchurch would stand, was still a year from its founding. The Van Diemen's Land inset shows an island still receiving convicts, with Hobart as its capital, and the Western Australia inset records the Swan River Colony, whose capital Perth was a small port settlement, about to receive its first convicts in 1850. Placing the three together shows how closely the colonies of the South Pacific were linked.

A New Zealander with settler ancestors from Wellington or Dunedin, a Tasmanian or Western Australian family, or a collector of Black's atlases would find a thoughtful gift here.
