Scotland 1611 – Rare Map by John Speed
Discounts applied at checkout
This full colour map shows "The Kingdome of Scotland" as it appeared in 1611. It was created by John Speed, one of Britain's most celebrated cartographers, based on an earlier map by Mercator and engraved by Jodocus Hondius for Speed's "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine." The Theatre was the first printed atlas of the British Isles, and its maps have been prized by collectors ever since.
An inset in the top right shows the Orkney Islands, while further insets depict King James of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Queen Anne, and Prince Henry. James had been King of Scots before he inherited the English throne in 1603, so the map shows his first kingdom only a few years after the two crowns were joined. Many towns and villages across Scotland are already visible, along with the Shetland Isles, the Hebrides, Skye, Loch Ness, Loch Lomond and the Mull of Kintyre.
This would make a wonderful gift for a proud Scot or anyone with a connection to Scotland. Like every print in the collection, it is printed on matte paper, ships unframed and is available in a range of sizes, from a compact study print to a large statement piece.
