This detailed map of The Seven United Provinces with their Dependencies was published in London in 1809 by Robert Wilkinson. It shows the seven provinces of Zeeland, Holland, Utrecht, Gelders, Overyssel, Friesland and Groenigen. Ebenezer Bourne engraved the map for Wilkinson, who had taken over the stock of the Bowles shop at Cornhill after John Bowles died in 1779. Wilkinson was active in London as a cartographic publisher from 1785 to 1825, and the sheet comes from that productive period. The title is a traditional one, naming the old republic of seven provinces and its dependencies across the sea. The map's detail and its list of dependencies make it a thorough summary of the old republic as London publishers understood it, with clear boundaries and carefully placed names.

Wilkinson produced a General Atlas and a reissue of Bowen & Kitchen's English Atlas, along with excellent large format separate maps. The majority of his work appeared between 1794 and 1816, and he was better known as a printmaker and publisher of books than as an original surveyor. He worked in two shops, first at 58 Cornhill and later at 125 Fenchurch Street, and his copper stock and printing materials were auctioned in 1825. A map of the Seven Provinces made in 1809 looked back at the old republic, since by then Napoleon's family ruled the country, so the sheet is a farewell to an older Netherlands.

A collector of English map publishing, a family with roots in Zeeland, Friesland or Groningen, or a reader of Dutch republican history will find an engaging gift here. TheMapVault's Le Rouge map of 1748 shows the same provinces from a Paris atlas, whereas this Wilkinson sheet is the London view of 1809. Like every print in the collection, it ships unframed and is available in a full range of sizes, from a compact desk piece to a large-format statement print.
