This engraved plan of Stockholm, titled Plan von Stockholm, dated 1844, comes from Meyer's Grosser Hand-Atlas uber alle Theile der Erde in 170 Karten, published by the Bibliographisches Institut of Hildburghausen in 1860. The catalog credits Joseph Meyer and the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, and notes that it is a simplified version of the Society's London map of 1836. The sheet measures about 42 by 36 centimeters, and it is numbered 40 in Meyer's atlas. It includes a view titled Ansicht von Stockholm von der Insel Langholm, a picture of the city seen from the island of Langholm. It is a useful and decorative sheet for anyone who likes a city plan with a picture.

The plan shows the streets, buildings and waterways of the Swedish capital in the clear and careful engraving of the age. The atlas is Meyer's grandest production, a real tour de force, with fifty maps of the Americas, many derived from the maps of Tanner and Mitchell, and many of its sheets bear Philadelphia as a place of publication along with several other cities. The view of the city from the water gives the sheet a pictorial interest beyond its plan. It shows Stockholm in the mid-nineteenth century, before the great expansion that followed in the later decades. The plan is a good record of the Swedish capital.

A traveler who knows Stockholm, a family with roots in Sweden, or a collector of German city plans will find a lasting gift here. TheMapVault's Meyer plan of Amsterdam from the same atlas shows a different capital, whereas this sheet is given to the Swedish city. Like every print in the collection, it ships unframed and is available in a full range of sizes, from a compact desk piece to a large-format statement print. It also makes a good pairing with other city plans. It will stay a pleasure to look at for many years.
