It was issued in a Dutch book that documented the progress of the Northern War, and it records Finland as it stood under Swedish control, just before large eastern portions were ceded to Russia under the Treaty of Nystad in 1721. The map outlines the provinces, lakes, rivers and fortified towns of the country in the eighteenth century, and its title opens with Finlande, in the French of Dutch publishing at the time. The sheet is a rare record of a country on the eve of great change, and its fine engraving rewards close study of the lakes and the fortified towns.

Pictorial relief shows mountain ranges along the Russian and Lapland borders, while a dense network of settlements and natural features fills the lake-dotted interior. The eastern edge of the sheet shows Laponie Moscovie, which extends into territories contested between Sweden and the Russian Empire under Peter the Great. Notable features include Lakes Ladoga and Saimaa, the Gulf of Bothnia and the Aland Islands. Scheurleer's Theatre Complet was a chronicle of the Northern War, and this sheet shows Dutch engraving practice applied to the military and political geography of the day. Lugtenburg's finely incised work is representative of map production in The Hague in this period.

A collector of Baltic history, a family with roots in Finland, or a reader of the Great Northern War will find a distinctive gift here. The sheet bears a Latin and German title, Postkarte von Finnland und Norrland, in keeping with the bilingual character of the atlas. Its subject is the network of mail routes that crossed the northern kingdoms at the end of the eighteenth century, so it records how letters and travelers moved across Finland and the adjoining Swedish and Norwegian lands. It is based on the pioneering surveys of the Swedish mathematician and cartographer Anders Bure, also known as Andreas Bureus, and it gives a detailed chorographic depiction of the region. The coverage extends from the Gulf of Bothnia and the Aland Islands in the west to Lake Ladoga and the Russian border in the east, and it takes in the whole of modern Finland, the Swedish coast around Stockholm and the Ingrian region. The sheet is colored, with relief shown by hachures and depths by bathymetric tints, and it measures about 34 by 42 centimeters. It was engraved on steel by Joseph Wilson Lowry and published in London by Chapman and Hall, 186 Strand, in 1847, as part of the Divisional Series. The atlas carries the date 1849 on its title page. The sheet measures about 43 by 34 centimeters, and the countries and states are outlined in color, with relief shown by hachures. It is a fine sheet for anyone who likes the clear style of steel engraving. The sheet is a plain and orderly teaching map that was made to be read closely and used often.

The map covers the Baltic Sea and the countries around it, with Denmark, Sweden and parts of Finland and Russia, in a view that stresses the sea as the link between them. The catalog notes that the atlas uses unusual map projections, since its maps were constructed on a system of scale that allowed the sheets to be compared with one another. Joseph Wilson Lowry was a noted engraver, and his precise steel engraving gives the sheet its clean lines and clear lettering. It is a good example of the careful work of the English atlas makers of the 1840s.

Those who enjoy Victorian atlases, a family with roots in Denmark, Sweden or Finland, or a sailor fond of the Baltic will find a thoughtful gift here. The complete edition of the atlas delineated the whole surface of the globe, with many special and original features and a copious index of 23,000 names. The sheet is a colored map, with relief shown by hachures and depths by bathymetric tints, and it shows cities, railroads, lights and lighthouses, forests and woodlands and glaciers. It measures about 34 by 42 centimeters. It is a clear and well-printed sheet. It was one of the more practical atlases of its age, and the firm's name stood for a reliable and affordable reference for the general reader of the day.

The map was made for practical use. Its glaciers, its forests and its lights speak of a region of long coasts and hard weather, and its railways show how the age of steam had begun to link the towns of the north. The tints of the sea, shaded to show depth, give the map a distinctive look among atlas maps of the time. The firm of Letts was known for popular and reliable reference works, and this atlas was a good example of their practical approach to the publication of maps for the general reader. The catalog credits Joseph Meyer and the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, and notes that it is a simplified version of the Society's London map of 1836. The sheet measures about 42 by 36 centimeters, and it is numbered 40 in Meyer's atlas. It includes a view titled Ansicht von Stockholm von der Insel Langholm, a picture of the city seen from the island of Langholm. It is a useful and decorative sheet for anyone who likes a city plan with a picture.

The plan shows the streets, buildings and waterways of the Swedish capital in the clear and careful engraving of the age. The atlas is Meyer's grandest production, a real tour de force, with fifty maps of the Americas, many derived from the maps of Tanner and Mitchell, and many of its sheets bear Philadelphia as a place of publication along with several other cities. The view of the city from the water gives the sheet a pictorial interest beyond its plan.
