This fine, full-color map of Denmark was published in London in 1851 by John Tallis, and the catalog calls it a marvelous map with a beautiful decorative border. The sheet carries a decorative depiction of Copenhagen, a view of Schleswig and the flag of the country, and its brightly colored regions are laid within the ornamental border that gave the Tallis maps their popular appeal. The map comes from the Tallis Illustrated Atlas, which was published for the Great Exhibition of 1851 and was one of the last series of decorative world maps ever produced. The sheet is one of the livelier maps of the country, and its flag and its view of the capital give it the cheerful look that Tallis was famous for.

John Tallis lived from 1817 to 1876 and was a British map publisher. Born in the Midlands, he came to London in the 1840s and began his career with a series of remarkable London street views. He began a partnership with a Frederick Tallis, possibly his brother, which ended in 1849. The maps of the Illustrated World Atlas were engraved by John Rapkin, a skilled artisan, and were later reissued by the London Printing and Publishing Company, which left the Tallis imprint intact, thus ensuring his enduring fame. In 1858 he began the popular Illustrated News of the World.

A collector of decorative atlas maps, a family with roots in Copenhagen or Jutland, or someone who loves a good border will find a lively gift here. TheMapVault's Arrowsmith map of Denmark from 1842 is plain and exact, whereas this Tallis sheet is full of scenes and color. Like every print in the collection, it ships unframed and is available in a full range of sizes, from a compact desk piece to a large-format statement print. It would suit a study or a hall.
