This decorative and detailed map of Scandinavia, titled Denmark, Sweden and Norway, was published by Anthony Finley in Philadelphia in 1824 and comes from his New General Atlas. The map is colored by provinces, and the catalog praises its wonderful color, so that the three northern kingdoms are set out in clear and cheerful divisions across the sheet. The atlas was a bestseller in its day, and its maps give an American view of the countries of Europe in the early nineteenth century, drawn in the careful and orderly manner that made Finley's atlas popular with schools and with the general public. It is a handsome sheet that suits a study or a hall.

Anthony Finley lived from about 1784 to 1836 and was an American map publisher of whom little is known. He is presumed to have been born in Philadelphia, where he also died, and he took part in several civic and professional societies of the city, among them the Philadelphia Apprentices' Library. He may have been in business as early as 1809, and his first publication dates from about 1811. His first atlas, the Atlas classica, appeared in 1818, and he is best known for A New General Atlas Comprising a Complete Set of Maps of 1824. The atlas was a bestseller of its day.

A student of early American atlases, a family with roots in Sweden, Norway or Denmark, or a lover of fine color will find a thoughtful gift here. TheMapVault's Lucas map of Denmark of 1823 is a close American contemporary, whereas this Finley sheet gives all three kingdoms together. Like every print in the collection, it ships unframed and is available in a full range of sizes, from a compact desk piece to a large-format statement print. It also makes a fine pairing with other early American maps of Europe. It will stay a pleasure to look at for many years.
