Lizars and published by A. Constable in 1822, and it shows the lands of the Highland clans as they were understood in the early nineteenth century. William Home Lizars was one of the leading Edinburgh engravers of his day, later known for engraving the first plates of Audubon's Birds of America. Surviving full-colour maps from this period are scarce, which makes this an especially rare piece of Scottish cartographic history.

The map appeared in the year King George IV visited Edinburgh, the occasion that did so much to revive the wearing of tartan. Dozens of ancient Highland clans are named across the map, including Mackenzie, MacDonald, MacLeod, Campbell, Grant, Stewart, MacGregor, Farquharson, Mackintosh, Gordon, Fraser, Chisholm and Sutherland, among many others. It is a wonderful reference for anyone tracing Scottish heritage or a Mac or Mc surname.

This would make a striking gift for a birthday, Christmas or housewarming for anyone with a connection to the Scottish Highlands. Like every print in the collection, it is printed on matte paper, ships unframed and is available in a range of sizes, from a compact study print to a large statement piece.

https://www.themapvault.com/en-nz/products/scotland-clan-map-1822-rare-highland-clans-print-by-wh-lizars
