This map of Chicago comes from Gray's Atlas and is dated 1873, as the bold title panel in the upper left corner declares. It is drawn at a scale of half a mile to the inch, large enough to name the streets block by block. The map shows the city only two years after the Great Fire of 1871, when Chicago was rebuilding at a speed that astonished the country.
The city limits are outlined in red, and the parks and boulevards are tinted green, with Humboldt Park prominent on the West Side. Avenues such as Milwaukee, Elston, Fullerton and North can be followed across the grid, and the branches of the Chicago River and the railroad lines cut through the blocks. The fine engraving keeps even the smallest street names legible.
This map suits a Chicago native, a family with roots in the city, or a collector of American city plans. It is a strong statement piece for a home or office and a fine housewarming gift. Like every print in the collection, it is printed on matte paper, ships unframed and is available in a range of sizes, from a compact study print to a large statement piece.
