This piece reproduces John Rocque's 1750 map of Bristol, surveyed, drawn, and published by Rocque at a time when the city was already one of England's busiest ports, though still compact enough to cross on foot in an afternoon. Around the perimeter of the original engraving, Rocque included ten small illustrations of Bristol landmarks, capturing buildings that residents of the day would have passed every week, including elevations of the city's Exchange.

You can trace the historic streets of Clifton, Kingsdown, and Redcliffe as they appeared in the mid-eighteenth century, alongside Bristol Cathedral, the church of St Mary Redcliffe, and the busy quaysides along the River Avon where merchant ships loaded and unloaded cargo from across the Atlantic. Queen Square and Corn Street, both fashionable addresses in Georgian Bristol, are clearly marked, offering a rare glimpse of the city before its Victorian expansion transformed the surrounding countryside into suburbs.

This restored edition keeps Rocque's fine linework and lettering sharp, making it a striking wedding gift for a couple who met or married in Bristol, a meaningful anniversary present for anyone with roots in the city, or a memorable corporate gift for a Bristol-based business marking a milestone. It also makes a lovely keepsake for genealogists tracing Bristol ancestors back to the Georgian era.
