Lloyd and published in 1873 by Stedman, Brown \u0026amp; Lyon of Baltimore, bound into the firm's New Topographical Atlas of the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia as one of several supplementary United States maps included alongside the main Maryland sheets. Lloyd's western maps circulated in more than one atlas during these years, and this Baltimore printing is laid out differently from the same base maps used two years earlier in an Illinois atlas published by Warner, Higgins \u0026amp; Beers, a small but genuine difference in how the maps were arranged from one publisher's edition to the next. The sheet itself is a hand-colored lithograph, its counties washed in full color and its terrain built up with both hachures and spot-height elevation marks. It covers California and Nevada by county just four years after the transcontinental railroad's 1869 completion, in the middle of a post-Civil War mining and settlement boom across the West.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSan Francisco anchors California's coast as the region's dominant port and financial center, its Gold Rush-era head start still giving it a commanding lead over the state's smaller cities. Los Angeles appears far to the south, still a modest town at this date, decades before the growth that would later make it California's largest city. Virginia City, across the state line in Nevada, is recorded at the heart of the Comstock Lode's silver-mining boom, the source of much of the wealth then flowing through the region. The Sierra Nevada divides the two states down the map's center, with the Sacramento and Colorado rivers tracing California's major drainage routes on either side of it. Together these places capture a mining and shipping economy still very much in motion.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis map suits a California or Nevada family with mining-era roots, a Comstock Lode history buff, or a collector piecing together the Stedman, Brown \u0026amp; Lyon atlas maps across their different regional editions. We also carry a nearly identical California and Nevada sheet from the same publisher dated 1872, printed in Cincinnati for a companion Ohio state atlas rather than in Baltimore for the Maryland edition seen here; the underlying cartography is close to identical between the two, and the honest distinction between them is really one of year and originating atlas rather than of content.
