California Map 1884 County Print - Sacramento, San Francisco, Oakland

Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr., working through Wm. M. Bradley & Bro. of Philadelphia, issued this California sheet in 1884, part of his New General Atlas published in 1886. This printing carries two insets, a detailed San Francisco city plan at roughly 1:24,000 scale showing wards and major buildings, and a separate map of San Francisco Bay and vicinity, alongside the statewide county map. The sheet maps California statewide, showing settlements, railroads, and rivers across a state whose economy had diversified well beyond its gold-rush origins by the 1880s.

The San Francisco inset gives the city its own street-level detail, capturing its wards and civic buildings at a scale the statewide map couldn't otherwise show, while the bay inset situates the city within its wider maritime setting. County boundaries are shaded across the rest of the state, tracing a settlement pattern reaching from the coast into California's agricultural Central Valley.
