Wytfliet's original Latin work, first published in 1597 as an augmented supplement to Ptolemy, holds a genuine claim as the first atlas ever devoted entirely to the Americas, and this French edition, combining his maps with Magini's descriptive text on the East and West Indies, carried that pioneering project to a wider readership across two further Latin printings and this French translation. The sheet is an uncoloured double-page engraving, its title cartouche decorated in the restrained style typical of very early Americana, filled with named settlements, rivers, forests and mountains rendered pictorially rather than through later cartographic conventions like hachuring. It records Canada barely three years after Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec in 1608, when European knowledge of the interior still depended almost entirely on reports from the handful of traders and missionaries who had actually travelled the St. Lawrence.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eQuebec City, founded only three years before this map's publication, is marked at the narrows that gave the settlement its defensible position on the St. Lawrence. Montreal, further upriver on the site earlier visited by Jacques Cartier and known to Indigenous peoples as Hochelaga, appears as a named point along the river even before its permanent French settlement in 1642. Tadoussac, at the mouth of the Saguenay River, is shown as an early fur-trading post, among the very first European footholds anywhere on the St. Lawrence. Rivers, forests and mountains fill the space between these named points, rendered pictorially in the engraving style typical of the earliest printed maps of the Americas.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis exceptionally early sheet makes a striking gift for a serious collector of colonial-era Americana rather than a simple family-roots print, its status as part of the first atlas ever devoted to the Americas giving it a historical weight the store's later commercial atlas maps don't carry. The store's other Canada and Quebec maps run considerably later, from an 1719 Chatelain regional sheet through Cram's 1893 World's Fair edition to the 1929 pictorial atlas series; this 1611 Wytfliet map predates all of them by more than a century, the only sheet in the collection engraved while Quebec City itself was still a handful of years old.
