Georgia in 1893 - Atlanta, Savannah, Augusta

Wood Brothers Cash Store, a general store in Unadilla, New York, commissioned this atlas from Chicago mapmaker George F. Cram as a promotional giveaway timed to the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, a way of putting a useful, handsome reference book into customers' hands while the whole country's attention was on the Columbian Exposition. The Georgia map is one of ninety state and territory maps that made up the finished volume.

Georgia's counties are outlined in red against the map's black-and-white base, with the state's borders picked out in blue and its cities and towns labeled across the map at a scale of 1:1,700,000. A latitude-and-longitude grid runs across the sheet, and both the Greenwich and Washington prime meridians are marked, in keeping with the atlas's standard layout. Rivers and the coastline are also traced in, rounding out a compact but detailed picture of the state's political geography in 1893.

It's a natural gift for a Georgia family with generations of history in one of these counties, for someone who grew up in the state and has since moved away, or for a collector filling in a set of Cram's 1893 state maps.
