It records the island of Hispaniola at an extraordinarily fraught moment: Napoleon had just dispatched General Leclerc's expedition to reassert French control over Saint-Domingue and restore slavery, a campaign that would collapse within the year and lead, by January 1804, to Haiti's declaration of independence as the first nation in the hemisphere to abolish slavery outright.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe map's political boundaries are picked out in red, blue and green to mark the shifting territorial divisions of the moment, while its topography traces the island's mountains, rivers and coastline with the careful hand expected of an official government atlas. To the northwest, the coastline of Cuba is sketched in to orient the reader, and along Hispaniola's western shore the map records the Canal de la Gonave, the strait separating the Haitian mainland from the Ile de la Gonave just offshore. The island appears divided, as it long had been, between the French-administered west and the older Spanish colony of Santo Domingo to the east, a division rendered with the same careful outline color used throughout.
