Finley's firm had outsold rivals Carey \u0026amp; Lea and Tanner through the 1820s on the strength of precise steel-plate engraving and high-quality paper, and this map, hand-colored by county and showing towns, roads, rivers, mountains, and other geographical features, captures Indiana barely fifteen years after statehood, at a moment when the state's settlement remained heavily concentrated in its southern half.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOnly the southern counties shown here remotely resemble their eventual modern configuration, while most of the northern portion of the state remains recorded as Indian lands, not yet ceded or surveyed for American settlement. A number of new counties had been organized since Finley's earlier 1824 edition of the map, yet Carroll, Tippecanoe, Warren, Wabash, Madison, Delaware, and several others across the north central part of the state still do not appear. Indianapolis, chosen as the new state capital in 1821 specifically for its central location, anchors the map amid this still-developing landscape, Vincennes represents Indiana's oldest permanent settlement along the Wabash River, dating to the early eighteenth-century French colonial period, and Fort Wayne, built at the strategic portage between the Maumee and Wabash watersheds, marks the northern frontier of American settlement at the edge of still-unceded Indian territory.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis map is a fitting gift for a family with Indiana roots, for a transplant now settled in Indianapolis, or for a collector of Finley's celebrated 1820s and 1830s state atlas.
