Each of its four regions is hand-colored and tinted separately, engraved with relief shown by hachures, its Indian reservations, rivers, and mountain ranges marked in careful detail across a landscape still being surveyed and settled as the map went to press. It covers the central plains and southern Rockies in 1865, a stretch of country still being organized into territories as westward settlement and the displacement of Native nations proceeded together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKansas, a state since 1861, is shown anchored by Topeka and traced by the Arkansas River across its southern counties. Colorado Territory is dominated by the Rocky Mountains, with Denver marked among the mining camps that had sprung up since the 1859 gold rush. New Mexico Territory extends south and west, centered on Santa Fe, the old Spanish colonial capital that by 1865 had passed through Mexican and then American rule. The Indian Territory, present-day Oklahoma, is shown separately, its Indian reservations marked in detail and Tahlequah, seat of the Cherokee Nation, recorded among its settlements.
