massachusetts-connecticut-and-rhode-island-in-1870-boston-hartford-providence
Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island in 1870 - Boston, Hartford, Providence

This county map of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island was drawn and engraved by W.H. Gamble of Philadelphia and published in 1870 within Mitchell's New General Atlas, one of the best-known American atlas series of the mid-nineteenth century, issued jointly here by S. Augustus Mitchell, Jr. and the Chicago publisher R.A. Campbell. The sheet is hand colored county by county and finished with relief shown by hachures and an ornate floral border, a decorative treatment distinct from the plainer outline-color atlases many rival publishers favored. It covers the compact cluster of southern New England states, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, together with their settlements, railroads, and rivers. By 1870 all three states stood as long-established, densely populated centers of American industry, their economies increasingly knit together by the railroad network this map takes care to record.

Boston appears as the commercial and cultural capital of Massachusetts, its harbor long the busiest in New England and its rail lines radiating outward to every corner of the region. Hartford, seated on the Connecticut River, is marked as Connecticut's capital and a center of the insurance trade that was already making the city's name synonymous with underwriting. Providence, at the head of Narragansett Bay, appears as Rhode Island's leading port and manufacturing town, its textile mills among the most productive in the country. The map also records Long Island Sound and Massachusetts Bay along the coastline, together with the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket lying off the Massachusetts shore. Taken together, this stretch of coast and its three capitals capture southern New England at the height of its nineteenth-century industrial and maritime power.

This map makes a fitting gift for anyone with family ties to Boston, Hartford, or Providence, or for a collector building a set of nineteenth-century New England county maps. Buyers assembling a Massachusetts and Rhode Island collection should note we also carry the region as mapped by Colton in 1856, with its inset of the Vicinity of Boston, and Massachusetts alone as recorded by Mathew Carey in 1815; this 1870 Mitchell and Campbell edition is the latest and most railroad-focused of the three, reflecting New England well into its industrial maturity. It is available unframed in a full range of sizes, from a compact study print to a larger statement piece.

https://www.themapvault.com/en-us/products/massachusetts-connecticut-and-rhode-island-in-1870-boston-hartford-providence
