new-york-city-map-1840-city-plan-manhattan-brooklyn-williamsburg
New York City Map 1840 City Plan - Manhattan, Brooklyn, Williamsburg

J. Calvin Smith drew this New York City plan in 1840, engraved by Stiles, Sherman & Smith and published by Tanner and Disturnell as a unique addition to the 1842 edition of Tanner's New Universal Atlas, a map that appears in no other edition of the atlas. This printing carries an ornate title cartouche with an urban scene worked into its upper corner, a compass rose for orientation, and a double-line border, all hand-colored to separate the city's neighborhoods and administrative sections. The sheet maps New York City, Brooklyn, and part of Williamsburg together, capturing the region years before Brooklyn and Manhattan would be joined into a single city, at a genuine city-plan scale showing individual streets rather than a statewide view.

Manhattan's street grid is rendered in close detail, the map's central focus and the seat of the rapidly growing commercial city already emerging as the country's leading port. Brooklyn and Williamsburg appear across the East River as their own distinct, still-separate municipalities, their inclusion reflecting how closely tied their growth already was to Manhattan's even before formal consolidation. Ferry routes are marked connecting the boroughs, the essential water-borne link before any bridge crossed the East River. Together Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Williamsburg sketch a metropolitan region already functioning as one economic unit while still governed as separate towns.

For a New York family with roots in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Williamsburg, or a collector drawn to the city's pre-consolidation history, this sheet has a specific pull. The store also carries New York from Cram's 1893 and 1883 editions, from two separate 1838 Bradford sheets, and Tanner's own 1840 statewide New York sheet elsewhere in the collection; unlike all of those broader state views, this J. Calvin Smith plan is the atlas's true city-scale map, the only one in the store to render Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Williamsburg down to street level. It's printed unframed and available in a range of sizes to fit whatever wall it's headed for.

https://www.themapvault.com/en-us/products/new-york-city-map-1840-city-plan-manhattan-brooklyn-williamsburg
