Phillips, C.E., and published in 1868 by H.H. Lloyd \u0026amp; Co. of New York for Henry S. Stebbins, appearing in the first edition of the Atlas of the State of Ohio compiled by Henry Francis Walling. That first edition atlas, issued four years before the Walling and Gray revision, grouped its county and city maps differently from the later printing and included nineteen pages of historical and statistical text along with a list of Ohio post offices, reflecting the ambitions of a young publishing partnership building a full state reference work from scratch. The map is a hand-colored engraving, its ward boundaries picked out in pale color against fine black linework, a technique still closer to the engraved state maps of the 1850s than to the bolder lithographs that would follow within the decade. It covers Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1868, just three years after the end of the Civil War, when the city's canal and railroad network was being rebuilt and extended to handle a fast-growing postwar economy.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Ohio River runs along the bottom of the sheet, the natural boundary and trade route around which Cincinnati's grid of wards and streets was organized. Mount Auburn is marked on high ground above the basin, one of the earliest of the city's hillside neighborhoods to appear by name on a published map. Canals and bridges are drawn crossing the city, alongside a growing network of railroads that, by the late 1860s, was beginning to compete with the waterways for the movement of freight. Wards are numbered and color-coded across the sheet, giving a precise picture of how Cincinnati's postwar city government had carved up a rapidly expanding population for administration and taxation. Together these details capture a river city still built around its waterfront but already reaching up into the hills and out along new rail lines.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis map appeals to a collector with roots in Mount Auburn or another of Cincinnati's early hillside neighborhoods, or to anyone building a year-by-year record of the city's nineteenth-century growth. As the earliest of the three Cincinnati maps offered in this collection, it predates both the 1872 Walling and Gray ward map and the more decoratively colored 1877 Gray edition, and it alone shows the city's canal network still functioning alongside its railroads rather than already eclipsed by them.
