This map of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri was produced by S. Augustus Mitchell Jr. and published in 1865 by E.H. Butler & Co.; spanning six states on one wide-format sheet, it ranks among the most ambitious entries in Mitchell's New Reference Atlas for Colleges, Libraries, Families and Counting Houses, a fifty-five-map atlas built to bring reference-grade geography into American classrooms and parlors alike. The sheet is hand-colored and engraved with relief shown by hachures, its county lines, railways, rivers, and mail routes packed densely across the whole region. It covers the Old Northwest alongside the border states of Kentucky and Missouri, published in 1865 as the Civil War ended and both border states entered Reconstruction alongside their fully Union neighbors to the north.

Ohio is centered on Columbus, its capital, with railways marking the state's role as a manufacturing hub between the East and the Midwest. Kentucky is shown along the Ohio River, anchored by Louisville, a border state whose roads were vital to wartime supply lines. Indiana appears with Indianapolis at its center, set amid the farmland that made the state a granary for the Union war effort. Illinois is recorded around Chicago and the southern shore of Lake Michigan, already emerging as the region's dominant rail and grain-shipping center. Iowa, newer and more sparsely settled, is shown west of the Mississippi with Des Moines among its counties. Missouri closes the sheet along the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, its largest city St. Louis positioned as gateway to the trans-Mississippi West.
