This celebrated map of the British Isles was originally published in 1611 by John Speed, widely regarded as one of the fathers of English cartography and the most notable mapmaker of the Jacobean era. Created as part of his landmark atlas work, it stands as one of the oldest, finest and most historically important maps ever produced of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland together on a single sheet.
The plate lays the four nations side by side, with the coastlines, county boundaries and river systems of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland all carefully engraved. An incredible level of detail runs across the sheet, with most towns, cities and even many villages named, from the great capitals of London, Edinburgh and Dublin to the Welsh seat of Cardiff, alongside countless smaller market towns, parishes and harbours scattered across the four kingdoms. Decorative flourishes typical of Speed's work frame the coastline, giving the whole map an unmistakably Jacobean character.
Spanning all four nations, this map makes a fitting housewarming, wedding, retirement or Christmas gift for anyone with English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish heritage, as well as a memorable corporate or anniversary gift. Originally hand-coloured over four centuries ago and still in remarkable condition for its age, every engraved detail has been carefully restored for this print.
