This detailed map of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight was originally published in 1794 by John Cary, one of the most respected commercial cartographers and engravers working in Georgian England. It formed sheet 15 of Cary's ambitious "New Map of England and Wales, with Part of Scotland", a county-by-county survey intended to bring accurate, up-to-date geography to a growing readership shortly before the outbreak of the Napoleonic Wars. Cary was known for the precision of his surveying and the clarity of his engraving, qualities that made his maps the standard reference of their day and that still shine through in this carefully restored print.

The map takes in the whole of Hampshire together with the Isle of Wight and a slice of neighbouring Surrey, and it is dense with named detail. Among the many places marked are Chichester, Havant, Southampton, Bishops Waltham, Romsey, Portsmouth, Winchester, Stockbridge, New Alresford, Alton, Whitchurch, Basingstoke, Odiham and Haslemere, tracing a route across the county from its coastal ports to its inland market towns. Portsmouth and Southampton appear as the great naval and maritime centres of the south coast, while Winchester is shown in its long-standing role as the historic county town.

A map of this kind makes a lovely gift for anyone with roots in Hampshire or the Isle of Wight, whether for a birthday, a housewarming in the area, a retirement present after a career spent by the Solent, or a wedding gift for a couple settling in the south of England. It would equally suit a Christmas present for a history enthusiast or a corporate gift for a Hampshire-based business. Every fine line of the original 1794 engraving, from the coastal soundings to the smallest village name, has been carefully restored for this print.
