This print reproduces sheet D1, one of the central sheets of that survey, covering the dense heart of London north of the Thames rather than the riverside or outer sheets. Rocque's survey was so thorough that an accompanying index published in 1748 listed more than five thousand five hundred individual locations, and sheet D1 sits at the centre of that achievement, packed with courts, alleys, and named buildings at a scale few earlier London maps had attempted.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSheet D1 covers Holborn and Clerkenwell in the north, running down through Farringdon and past the old walls of the Barbican into the City of London proper, with Smithfield Market marked in detail as the great livestock market it had been for centuries. Westminster's eastern edge also falls within the sheet's coverage, and Rocque records the lanes, inns of court, and parish churches that filled this crowded quarter of Georgian London with a density that makes the sheet rewarding to study closely.
