Lewis's publishing house in London set out to describe every county, barony and parish in Ireland in exhaustive detail, and the matching maps were produced so that readers could locate the places named in the text at a glance. The Kildare sheet captures the county in the years just before the Great Famine, when its network of market towns, canals and racing grounds had already given it a distinct identity within the wider Leinster province.

Naas, the county town since around the sixth century, sits at the heart of the sheet as a long-established market centre, while Athy, built up along the banks of the River Barrow, had grown into an important staging point for trade and transport. Maynooth appears to the north-east, home to Maynooth Castle and to St Patrick's College, and Newbridge is shown as a comparatively young settlement whose growth was tied to the arrival of the Great Southern and Western Railway. The Curragh's open grasslands, already established as a centre for horse racing and military training, spread across the centre of the county, and Kildare town itself, with its ancient monastic foundation and cathedral ruins, lies close by. Further afield, Leixlip and Rathangan appear along the Grand Canal, which had reached completion in 1804, while the River Liffey threads through the county and the Wicklow Mountains rise along its southern edge.

With the Curragh long established as the home of Irish horse racing, this map makes a natural gift for anyone with a connection to the turf, whether that's a racing enthusiast, a trainer, or someone who grew up near the gallops. It also suits anyone who has recently settled in Naas, Athy, Maynooth or Newbridge and wants a sense of how their new home looked before the commuter belt grew up around it. The print is available unframed, in a full range of sizes, so it can be scaled to whatever wall it's destined for.

https://www.themapvault.com/en-us/products/old-map-of-county-kildare-in-1844-by-samuel-lewis-naas-athy-maynooth
