This map of Dublin was engraved by W.B. Clark for the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, an educational body founded in London in the 1820s that published affordable, carefully researched maps and reference works for a general readership rather than wealthy collectors. Published in 1836, this sheet reflects the Society's characteristically thorough approach, mapping Dublin's streets, quays and public buildings in close detail at a point when the city remained the administrative and cultural capital of Ireland, still some decades before the reorganisation that followed Irish independence. This print is offered in an alternate hand-colouring to our other edition of the same 1836 plate, giving a genuinely different palette while preserving the full detail of Clark's original engraving.

The River Liffey runs through the heart of the map, dividing the city as it has since Dublin's earliest Viking-era settlement, its quays lined with the warehouses and civic buildings that made it the commercial spine of the capital. The map sits Dublin within the wider province of Leinster, recording the city's relationship to the surrounding county and the roads radiating out toward the rest of Ireland. As a Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge production, the sheet favours clear, functional detail over decorative flourish, giving a genuinely useful record of Dublin's street plan as it stood in the mid-1830s.

This alternate-colouring edition suits a collector who already owns our other WB Clark Dublin print and wants a genuinely different reading of the same 1836 plate, or anyone who simply prefers this particular palette. It also makes a fitting gift for anyone with Dublin family roots or a love of the city's Georgian and early Victorian street plan. It is available unframed in a full range of sizes, from a compact study print to a larger piece for a hallway or sitting room.
