This richly detailed map of the Lake District was engraved by John Rapkin and published in 1851 by J. Tallis & Co, one of the leading English mapmaking firms of the Victorian era. At the time this map was drawn, the region was split between three historic counties - Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire - long before they were unified into modern-day Cumbria. Bordering the map are charming vignette engravings of Lakeland scenery, including views of Windermere, Lancaster Castle, Keswick and Carlisle.

Nearly every town, village and lake of the region is picked out by hand in soft, period-accurate colour. Look closely and you'll find Derwentwater, Windermere, Ullswater, Bassenthwaite and Coniston Water, along with landmarks like Scafell Pike, Helvellyn, Striding Edge and the Bowder Stone. Keswick, Bowness-on-Windermere, Ravenglass and Muncaster all appear too - so if you or someone you love grew up rambling these fells or holidaying by these lakes, there's a good chance you'll spot a familiar name.

A map this evocative makes a lovely gift for birthdays, Christmas, retirement or a housewarming - especially for someone from the northwest of England or anyone who carries a piece of the Lake District in their heart.
