Positioned in the top row of the twenty-four-sheet grid, this section covers the developing West End around Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road, an area later known as Fitzrovia but still, in Rocque's day, a patchwork of newly laid-out squares beside open ground.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCavendish Square anchors the sheet's centre, laid out from 1717 by the Earl of Oxford as the centrepiece of a grand new estate, its houses only partly built by the time Rocque surveyed the ground. Oxford Street runs along the sheet's southern edge, still remembered by many Londoners under its older name of Tyburn Road, leading west toward the gallows at Tyburn, while Tottenham Court Road climbs north past fields and tea gardens toward the village of that name.
