Rocque spent years surveying London street by street, recording buildings, courtyards and gardens with a precision no earlier map of the capital had matched. Sheet B2 covers the fashionable West End as it stood in the mid-18th century, an area that was, by this date, largely built up with the grand squares and townhouses of Georgian London's wealthiest residents, in contrast to areas south of the river which the same survey recorded as still largely open fields.

Piccadilly runs across the sheet as one of the principal routes out of London to the west, already lined with substantial houses by 1746. Mayfair appears fully laid out around its garden squares, home to the capital's most fashionable addresses, while Soho, further east, is shown as a dense grid of streets that had been filling in with housing since the late 17th century. St James's appears at the southern edge of the sheet, close by Green Park, itself already established as royal parkland by this date. Also visible on the sheet is Buckingham House, the country mansion built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 that stood on the edge of the built-up city at the time Rocque surveyed it, decades before it was purchased by George III and rebuilt into the royal palace known today.

This sheet makes a fitting gift for anyone with a connection to Mayfair, Soho or St James's, whether through work, family history or simply a love of this part of London. It pairs naturally with our other Rocque and Pine sheets covering Holborn, Bloomsbury, the City and south of the river, and suits a collector piecing together a fuller room-by-room record of Georgian London. Every print is supplied unframed and available across our full range of sizes, from a compact study print to a larger piece for an office or sitting room.

https://www.themapvault.com/en-us/products/old-map-of-london-in-1746-by-john-rocque-sheet-b2-mayfair-soho-st-jamess-piccadilly-green-park
