Rocque, working with the engraver John Pine, surveyed the whole of London, Westminster and Southwark between 1741 and 1745, and this sheet was drawn in enough detail to show the internal plan of St Paul's Cathedral, one of only a handful of buildings the survey treated to that level of interior detail.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWest of the cathedral, the sheet covers Blackfriars, named for the Dominican friary dissolved two centuries earlier, an area still served only by river stairs and ferries in 1746, since the bridge that would eventually carry its name was not built until 1769. Fleet Street runs through the sheet toward Temple Bar, passing close by the Inner and Middle Temple, the Inns of Court whose gardens and courts Rocque recorded in careful detail, while the Fleet River, by this date largely covered over as a sewer, threads down toward the Thames nearby. Across the water, the sheet takes in Bankside and Upper Ground in Southwark, a stretch of riverside given over by the 1740s to timber yards, glasshouses and wharves, long after the theatres and bear-baiting rings that had made the area notorious in Shakespeare's time had disappeared.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBetween the legal quarter around Temple and the industrial river frontage of Bankside, this sheet covers some of the more varied ground in Rocque's entire survey, making it a rewarding gift for a City lawyer, a Fleet Street history buff, or a collector working through the full twenty-four-sheet set.
