This extraordinary hand-coloured map of Yorkshire was created by the master Amsterdam cartographer Joan Blaeu in 1654, published in his celebrated Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Nearly 400 years old, this is an exceptionally fine example of one of the rarest maps of Yorkshire, lovingly restored to reveal the vibrant colours and intricate detail of the original.
When Blaeu drew this map, Yorkshire was still divided into three Ridings - North, West, and East - with York as the county's heart. Many familiar towns appear: York, Bradford, Sheffield, Leeds, Wakefield, Middlesbrough, and Harrogate, a testament to Yorkshire's early development as one of England's most prosperous counties.
An ideal gift for Yorkshire natives, history enthusiasts, or anyone with deep affection for the North of England, this stunning restoration captures the region as it was when the Stuarts ruled Britain. Display it proudly as a window into Yorkshire's layered past.
