This historical map of Somerset was compiled by Samuel Lewis in 1844, part of the wider tradition of detailed topographical surveys Lewis became known for through his influential "Topographical Dictionary" project, which catalogued the towns, parishes and landmarks of England county by county. Published in the heart of the Victorian era, this map captures Somerset at a time of rapid change, as railways, seaside resorts and industry were beginning to reshape a county whose towns, in many cases, already had centuries of recorded history behind them.

The map traces the growth of the county through its principal towns: Bristol, already a major port thriving on shipbuilding and maritime trade since the 10th century; Bath, built around its Roman-era baths and now a World Heritage Site; Weston-super-Mare, a seaside resort that grew from the mid-13th century into a popular destination famed for its sandy beach and grand pier; Taunton, the county town, home to Taunton Castle with roots in the Anglo-Saxon era; Yeovil, later famed for its aircraft and defence industries; Bridgwater, noted for its historic carnival and its position as gateway to the Quantock Hills; and Frome, whose market history dates back to 685 AD.

This map makes a fitting housewarming gift for a new home anywhere in Somerset, a wedding gift for a couple with ties to Bristol or Bath, or a retirement present for someone settling by the coast at Weston-super-Mare. It also suits a Christmas gift for a history-loving relative or a corporate gift for a business based in the West Country. Every fine detail of Lewis's original 1844 Victorian survey has been carefully restored for this print.
