Half an inch to the mile was the scale that made John Bartholomew's name among Edwardian travellers, and Sheet 36 of his layered-relief series for England and Wales covers South Devon at exactly that resolution. First issued in 1901, the sheet was aimed squarely at the cyclists and early motoring tourists who were beginning to explore the West Country in growing numbers, its colour bands marking height above sea level in the style that became the firm's signature.

Exeter sits at the map's northern edge, the cathedral city and county town on the tidal River Exe, with the Exe Estuary opening out below it toward the sea. Torquay and the wider sweep of Torbay occupy the coast to the south-east, already established as a fashionable resort by the time this sheet was drawn. Dartmoor's granite tors and open moorland dominate the interior, rising well above the surrounding farmland and threaded by the Dart and Teign rivers. At the map's southern tip, Start Point juts into the Channel, its lighthouse marking one of the more hazardous stretches of the South Devon coast for shipping making for Plymouth or Torbay.

Walkers who know Dartmoor's tors, sailors familiar with the approach to Torbay, and anyone with family roots in this corner of Devon should recognise plenty on this sheet, making it a natural gift for a retirement move to the coast. High-resolution reproduction preserves Bartholomew's fine relief shading, and the print ships unframed in whichever size suits your wall.
