Pennsylvania's statewide map appears in Thomas G. Bradford's 1838 An Illustrated Atlas, published in Boston and New York by Weeks, Jordan & Co. and Wiley and Putnam. Pennsylvania in 1838 was in the thick of the anthracite coal boom that would define its economy for the rest of the century, with the state's Main Line of Public Works, a combined canal-and-railroad system completed just four years earlier, finally giving Philadelphia a direct route to Pittsburgh and the growing coal fields of the interior. Engraved by George W. Boynton at a scale of roughly 1:1,393,920, the map is hand-colored by county in the atlas's signature style.

Mountain ranges cut across the state's interior in fine hachure work, with rivers and county lines rounding out a busy, detailed sheet — appropriate for a state whose coal-and-canal geography was, by this point, the backbone of its rise as an industrial power.
