Bradford and engraved by George W. Boynton, published in 1838 as part of Bradford's Illustrated Atlas, Geographical, Statistical, and Historical of the United States, issued jointly in Boston and New York. Widely regarded as Bradford's finest work and a marked improvement on his smaller, more crudely drawn Comprehensive Atlas, each map in the atlas was paired with descriptive text, and this sheet was finished in full hand-painted color with each county rendered in its own distinct shade. It depicts South Carolina five years after the Nullification Crisis had pitted the state against the federal government over tariffs, a period when its plantation economy and assertive states'-rights politics were setting the tone for the sectional tensions that would follow.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCharleston is marked as the state's great Atlantic port, the historic hub of the rice and cotton trade that had built the fortunes of the South Carolina low country since colonial times. Columbia appears inland as the seat of government, chosen as state capital in 1786 for its central, more defensible location away from the coast. The low country around Charleston remained given over to rice and long-staple cotton cultivation on large plantations, while the up-country toward the interior, including the Spartanburg district, was turning increasingly to short-staple cotton as the state's plantation economy expanded westward.
