Utah & Nevada Map 1884 Township Print - Salt Lake City, Carson City, Reno

Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr., working through Wm. M. Bradley & Bro. of Philadelphia, issued this Utah and Nevada sheet in 1884, part of his New General Atlas published in 1886. This printing carries a dedicated inset of southern Nevada alongside the main statewide maps, extending its coverage into a stretch of the state a single sheet wouldn't otherwise have room to detail. The sheet maps Utah and Nevada jointly, showing settlements, railroads, and rivers across a Great Basin region shaped by mining and Mormon agricultural settlement.

County and township boundaries are laid out across both states, a settlement pattern still concentrated around Utah's Mormon-founded valley towns and Nevada's scattered mining districts. The southern Nevada inset extends the sheet's detail into the state's more sparsely developed desert reaches, an area the main map's scale couldn't otherwise show clearly. Railroads and relief, shown through hachures, trace the routes and terrain connecting the two states' mining camps and farm towns. Together the counties, the southern Nevada inset, and the railroads sketch two Great Basin states whose settlement still clustered tightly around water and ore, leaving much of the region between their towns still open desert.

For a Utah or Nevada family with mining-era or early-settlement roots, or a collector building out the two states' maps across the decades, this sheet has a specific pull.
