Wyoming in 1893 - Cheyenne, Yellowstone National Park, Laramie

Wood Brothers Cash Store of Unadilla, New York, gave this atlas to its customers in 1893, commissioning the volume from Chicago's George F. Cram as a tie-in to that year's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Ninety state and territory maps made up the finished book, and this sheet, covering Wyoming, is one of them, printed just three years after Wyoming entered the Union as the forty-fourth state.

The Wyoming map marks out counties including Natrona, Carbon, and Laramie in red outline, with hachures used to render the relief of the state's mountain ranges. Yellowstone National Park is called out in the northwest corner, already twenty-one years old as the nation's first national park by the time this map was printed, and the Wind River and Sweetwater River are traced across the map along with the Wind River Indian Reservation. Cities and towns are labeled at a scale of 1:2,500,000, and the sheet carries printed figures for population and area in square miles, alongside both the Greenwich and Washington prime meridians.
