Henry Darwin Rogers and Alexander Keith Johnston issued this sheet covering Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey in 1857, published in London by Edward Stanford and engraved by W. & A.K. Johnston of Edinburgh, part of their Atlas of the United States. This printing combines all nine northeastern states on a single sheet, each outlined by state with county lines marked in blue, a scope no other edition in this collection attempts. The sheet maps the entire northeastern seaboard jointly, a British-published overview of the country's most densely settled corner.

All nine states' outlines are distinctly colored across the sheet, with county lines in blue layered beneath the state-level detail, a compact administrative view of a region that was, by 1857, already the most industrialized and urbanized part of the country. Major cities, towns, and railroads appear across the sheet, tracing a transportation network already considerably more developed than the Plains and Western territories covered elsewhere in this atlas. Rivers, mountain ranges, and coastlines round out the sheet's geography, a varied terrain from Maine's rocky coast to New Jersey's Atlantic shore. Together the nine state outlines, the railroads, and the coastline sketch the settled, industrial heart of mid-19th-century America compressed onto one sheet.

For a family with roots anywhere across the Northeast, or a collector drawn to this British-published overview of the American seaboard, this sheet has a specific pull. The store also carries all nine of these states individually or in smaller regional groupings across Cram's 1893 and 1883 editions, Bradford's 1838 atlas, and Tanner's earlier sheets; this 1857 Rogers and Johnston sheet is the only one in the store to combine all nine northeastern states on a single map. It's printed unframed and available in a range of sizes to fit whatever wall it's headed for.
