Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr., working through Wm. M. Bradley & Bro. of Philadelphia, issued this Ohio sheet in 1884, part of his New General Atlas published in 1886. This printing carries a diagram showing the arrangement of sections within a township, a practical land-survey reference alongside the statewide county map, and is hand-colored to separate the state's counties clearly. The sheet maps Ohio statewide, showing settlements, railroads, and rivers across a state whose industrial and agricultural economy had, by the 1880s, made it one of the country's most densely developed.

Ohio's counties are shaded distinctly across the sheet, a settlement pattern reflecting decades of dense agricultural and industrial development since the state's earliest surveys. The township-section diagram gives the sheet an added practical layer, a reference to how land in the Midwest was actually divided and sold under the federal survey system. Railroads crisscross the state in a dense network, and Lake Erie anchors Ohio's northern border. Together the counties, the township diagram, and the railroads sketch a state whose settled, subdivided landscape had, by 1884, little open land left to survey, its farms and industrial towns filling in nearly every county the map shows.

For an Ohio family with late-19th-century roots, or a collector building out the state's maps across the decades, this sheet has a specific pull. The store also carries Ohio from Cram's 1893 and 1883 editions, combined with Indiana in Asher & Adams' 1874 atlas, and Tanner's earlier 1841 sheet; this 1884 Mitchell sheet is the only one of the group to include the township-section land-survey diagram alongside its county map. It's printed unframed and available in a range of sizes to fit whatever wall it's headed for.
