Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr., working through Wm. M. Bradley & Bro. of Philadelphia, issued this Washington, D.C. city plan in 1886, drawn and engraved by W.H. Gamble as part of Mitchell's New General Atlas. This printing shows the city's wards, major public buildings, and its railroad connections, a level of administrative and infrastructural detail reflecting how much the capital had grown and modernized in the half-century since the atlas's earlier Washington plan. The sheet maps the federal city itself, its ward divisions and building locations hand-colored for clarity across a capital that had, by the 1880s, become a considerably denser and more fully built-out city than in its earlier decades.

The Capitol remains a named anchor on the sheet, its position unchanged even as the city grown up around it had transformed considerably since the 1830s. The Potomac River and the Eastern Branch continue to bound the city's layout, the same two waterways that had shaped Washington's design from its founding. Railroads appear on this later plan, a form of transportation entirely absent from the capital's earlier maps and a clear marker of how thoroughly the city had modernized by 1886. Together the wards, the Capitol, and the new rail connections sketch a capital that had matured from a sparsely built federal outpost into a genuine, well-connected American city.

For a Washington, D.C. family with roots in the capital, someone who's settled there more recently, or a collector drawn to the city's later 19th-century development, this sheet has a specific pull. The store also carries Tanner's earlier 1836 plan of the city elsewhere in this collection; this 1886 Mitchell sheet, drawn fifty years later, captures a Washington transformed by ward-based administration and rail connections the earlier, more sparsely built city didn't yet have. It's printed unframed and available in a range of sizes to fit whatever wall it's headed for.
