This detailed map of the West Indies was published in Chicago in 1882 by Rand McNally & Company, only two years after the firm had entered the education market with a growing line of globes, wall maps and geography texts for American schools. Rand McNally had built its reputation on printing railway tickets and timetables when William Rand and Andrew McNally first partnered in 1868, and its first map had appeared just a decade earlier, in 1872, produced using a then-new and relatively inexpensive wax-engraving process that gave the young firm an edge over more established competitors. This West Indies sheet, finished within a decorative border, reflects the firm's expanding ambitions beyond railway publishing into general reference and educational cartography.

The map's coverage runs from Florida, Cuba, the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands in the west all the way to Puerto Rico in the east, with a large separate inset devoted to the Windward Islands, or Lesser Antilles, extending the sheet's reach across virtually the entire Caribbean basin. Topographical detail is unusually fine for a map of this scope, and a substantial number of place names are recorded across the islands, giving the sheet real reference value rather than merely a decorative overview. The inclusion of the Cayman Islands alongside the more commonly mapped Cuba and Bahamas is a notable touch, reflecting Rand McNally's ambition to be genuinely comprehensive rather than covering only the region's best-known destinations. Together the broad geographic sweep and the detailed Windward Islands inset make this one of the more complete single-sheet treatments of the West Indies from the early 1880s.

This map is a fine choice for a collector assembling a run of West Indies cartography, or for anyone with ties spanning multiple islands across the Caribbean. Three other broad West Indies maps sit elsewhere in this collection, dated 1842, 1871 and 1967; this 1882 Rand McNally sheet is distinguished from the earlier two by its inclusion of the Cayman Islands and its dedicated Windward Islands inset, and from the much later Soviet edition by its firmly American, education-market origins. It is available unframed in a full range of sizes, from a compact study print to a larger statement piece.
