The Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge prepared this map of British Columbia and Vancouver Island for Edward Stanford's 1872 edition of the Family Atlas, an updated printing of the same eighty-map, steel-engraved reference the Society had issued in 1865. This sheet is a direct revision of the earlier edition rather than a newly drawn map, its steel engraving and hand colouring carrying over the same house style while its content is brought current with British Columbia's status as a full Dominion province, confirmed just a year before this printing in 1871. The atlas as a whole paired its regional maps with a geological map of England and Wales and star maps by Sir John Lubbock, an unusually broad scope for a single British reference work of the period. It records the province at a genuinely pivotal moment, its Vancouver Island and mainland colonies unified only six years earlier and now, since 1871, formally part of Confederation rather than a separate Pacific outpost of the British Empire.

Victoria, on Vancouver Island, remains marked as the provincial capital, its role carried over from the colonial period even after the mainland and island colonies merged. New Westminster, on the Fraser River, appears as the mainland's former colonial capital, its administrative importance already fading as Victoria consolidated authority over the united province. The Cariboo district, in the province's interior, is acknowledged as the site of the gold rush that had first drawn large numbers of settlers to British Columbia in the 1860s, even as that boom had cooled considerably by 1872. Together these places trace a province transitioning from a gold-rush colony into a settled part of a transcontinental Dominion.

This sheet suits a British Columbia family with roots on Vancouver Island or in the Cariboo goldfields, or a collector building out the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge's full run of British Columbia editions. The store also carries this same atlas's earlier 1865 printing of British Columbia and Vancouver Island, drawn while the San Juan Islands boundary dispute was still unresolved and before Confederation, and a broader 1872 British North America sheet from the same atlas year covering the whole Dominion rather than this province alone; this edition is the more detailed and regionally focused of the two 1872 sheets. It's offered unframed and available across a full range of sizes, from a compact print to a large-format wall piece.
