This detailed street map shows Chicago in 1875, four years after the Great Fire, when the rebuilt city was pushing its grid out across the prairie. An ornate scrollwork border frames the sheet, the city limits are outlined in red, and the parks and boulevards are tinted green. Streets are named block by block, which makes the map as useful for tracing an old address as it is handsome on a wall.
On the West Side the map shows Humboldt Park and the boulevard that links it to the rest of the park system, part of the ring of parks and boulevards planned for the city from 1869. Milwaukee Avenue runs diagonally across the grid, and the tracks of the Chicago & North Western and the other railroads thread through the neighborhoods. Beyond the built-up blocks the land is still open, a reminder of how quickly the city was growing.
This map suits a Chicago native, a family with roots in the city, or anyone with an interest in how American cities were built. It is a fine gift for a housewarming, a birthday or Christmas. Like every print in the collection, it is printed on matte paper, ships unframed and is available in a range of sizes, from a compact study print to a large statement piece.
