This joint Kentucky and Tennessee map comes from Asher & Adams' New Commercial, Topographical, and Statistical Atlas and Gazetteer of the United States, published in New York in 1874, one of the first American atlases built specifically around railroad lines. This copy is the most complete late-1874 printing, electrotyped at the Franklin Type Foundry and bound in quarter leather with gilt-stamped boards, its relief shown throughout by hachures rather than left flat. Both border states had spent the years since the Civil War rebuilding rail lines damaged or destroyed during the conflict, and by 1874 that reconstruction was largely complete — the dense network shown here reflects a region firmly reintegrated into national commerce, a sharp contrast to the war years when Kentucky and Tennessee had been contested ground fought over by both armies.

Louisville and Nashville anchor opposite ends of the map as the two states' principal rail hubs, with the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers both crossing it on their way toward the Ohio — waterways that had carried the region's trade for decades before the railroads shown here took over that role. The map marks townships and rail distances using the atlas's dual Greenwich and Washington prime meridians, showing towns chiefly where they sit on or near a line rather than mapping settlement more broadly. Hachured relief hints at the Appalachian foothills rising along the map's eastern edge, ground the rail network shown here still only skirted rather than crossed.

This one resonates with a Kentucky or Tennessee family, a transplant who's kept regional ties, or a collector of Gilded Age railroad atlases. Our 1838 Bradford sheets for Kentucky and Tennessee separately show both states a generation earlier, in the settled Jacksonian era well before the war that would later tear through them and long before either state's rail network existed in any meaningful form. This 1874 map instead documents a region actively rebuilding, its commerce reoriented around rail rather than the rivers that once carried it. The print is offered unframed and in multiple sizes.
