This map of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont was produced by S. Augustus Mitchell Jr. and published in 1865 by E.H. Butler & Co., the Philadelphia firm that issued Mitchell's New Reference Atlas for the Use of Colleges, Libraries, Families and Counting Houses across fifty-five sheets. Each state here is hand-colored in its own distinct tint, Maine in yellow, New Hampshire in pink, and Vermont in green, with relief shown by hachures across the mountainous northern terrain, giving each state's own character a distinct visual identity on the page. It covers northern New England in 1865, the year the Civil War ended and the region's railways, then still expanding, were opening the interior of all three states to trade and settlement.

Maine, the largest of the three by far, is shown anchored by Portland, its principal port and commercial city on the Atlantic coast. New Hampshire is centered on Concord, its capital, set among the White Mountains that the map's hachures render in careful detail. Vermont, landlocked and the most rural of the three, is anchored by Montpelier, one of the smallest state capitals in the country. Rivers and railways link all three states across the sheet, tracing the transportation corridors that were drawing settlement and industry deeper into northern New England by the mid-1860s.

Before the White and Green Mountains became a summer destination, they looked like this: a Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont native, or a collector rounding out a set of Mitchell's New England sheets, will find this an honest period record of home. It works equally well as a gift tied to a family camp, farmhouse, or summer place anywhere across the three states. It is available unframed in a full range of sizes, from a compact study print to a larger statement piece for a cabin or study wall.
