This printing is hand-colored with relief shown through hachures, combining all three states onto a single sheet, tracking a stretch of the lower Mississippi Valley whose cotton and river-shipping economy had, by the mid-1880s, fully recovered and reorganized in the two decades since the Civil War. The sheet maps Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana jointly, their counties and parishes laid out in Mitchell's characteristic style.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Mississippi River runs the length of the sheet, the dominant waterway tying all three states together and still the primary route for cotton and other goods moving toward New Orleans and the Gulf. Railroads appear threading through the region, a postwar rebuilding of the transportation network that had been badly disrupted through the 1860s.
