The map also documents an internal dispute among the railroad's controlling partners: Stanford had pushed for a route terminating in Santa Monica and had already built a large pier there, while Crocker favored redirecting the line through Palm Springs toward Yuma, a decision that ultimately cut San Diego out of the direct route entirely.
