This Cincinnati printing represents a revised edition of an atlas the same publisher had first issued in 1868, updated four years later to reflect the changes sweeping the West in the years just after the transcontinental railroad's completion. The sheet is a hand-colored lithograph in the same style as the firm's other state maps of the period, its counties washed in full color and its terrain built up with hachures and spot-height elevation marks. It covers California and Nevada by county in the early 1870s, a period of continuing silver-mining wealth and railroad-driven settlement across both states.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSan Francisco again dominates the coastline as California's commercial and financial hub, its harbor still the busiest point of entry for people and goods arriving in the state. Virginia City, over the state line in Nevada, marks the center of the Comstock Lode, the silver strike that had turned the Nevada desert into one of the era's great mining boomtowns. Between the two states, the Sierra Nevada rises across the map in hachured relief, the natural divide that shaped both the mining routes below it and the railroad lines beginning to cross it.
