It was brought back into print in 1742 by the Amsterdam house of Covens \u0026amp; Mortier, successors to de l'Isle's own engravings, in their Atlas Nouveau, and carries a secondary Latin title, Insulae S. Dominicae Tabula Accuratissima, in its upper margin, a nod to the map's claim to scientific precision. The engraving is finished in outline color with relief shown pictorially and two decorative compass roses worked into the design, a restrained but confident style typical of French royal cartography reissued for the Dutch market. Saint-Domingue's economy at this date rested heavily on sugar and, increasingly, coffee, crops that would drive the colony to extraordinary wealth over the following decades even as they depended on a brutal plantation system. The map's dual French and Latin titling, and its careful royal pedigree, reflect an island that mattered enormously to eighteenth-century France, mapped here with the same rigor the crown applied to its own metropolitan territory.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis early edition suits a collector with ties to Haiti or the Dominican Republic, or anyone assembling a run of eighteenth-century Caribbean cartography. Two later maps of the same island sit elsewhere in this collection, an 1803 Poirson chart and an 1876 Haitian schoolroom map; this 1742 Covens \u0026amp; Mortier edition predates both by decades, offering the earliest view of Hispaniola in the group and the only one drawn under the ancien regime, well before the Haitian Revolution reshaped the island's politics entirely.
